The Urban Lantern

Residential

Shelke Residence, Kolhapur.
The Urban Lantern, is a contemporary multi-generational home that balances privacy, togetherness, and urban sophistication. Located along a busy road, the house responds to its context through a semi-permeable façade of terracotta jali and layered decks that buffer noise, glare, and traffic while preserving openness and light.
Designed for an entrepreneur couple, their adult children, and ageing mother This house is Planned as a ground-plus-three structure, thoughtfully accommodating three generations with distinct spatial needs. A self-contained, accessible unit on the ground floor offers independence and comfort to the ageing mother, while upper floors house formal entertaining spaces, intimate family areas, and private bedrooms interconnected through double-height atriums and visual links.
At its core, the house is designed as an uncluttered, free-flowing environment where light, ventilation, and spatial continuity shape everyday life. Minimal materials, warm textures, pastel palettes, and custom-crafted details lend the interiors a refined urban character. By night, the softly illuminated terracotta façade transforms the home into a glowing lantern amidst the cityscape, giving the project its name and identity.
