The Contemporary Wada is a multi-generational home designed for an extended family, reinterpreting the traditional Maharashtrian wada, for contemporary living. Conceived as a single residence that can evolve into two independent homes for two brothers and their families, the design balances togetherness with privacy.
Organized around a central open-to-sky courtyard, the house creates a shared social core where family life unfolds, while private spaces are arranged along the periphery for solitude and flexibility. Responding to the sloping site, the home seamlessly integrates multiple levels, separate access points, interconnected volumes, and shaded verandas that encourage interaction across generations.
Minimal in material expression and rooted in climatic responsiveness, the project draws from the essence of the traditional Wada; community, openness, and visual connectivity, while adapting it to the needs of contemporary family life.
