Retreat by the Sea

Residential

Devgad Beach House
Nestled along a secluded beach in the Konkan region, Devgad Beach House is a sensitive renovation of an existing vernacular retreat, reimagined to suit a more open, social, and contemporary way of living. Ar. Shirish Beri had originally conceived it as an introverted weekend home for his personal use. Thereafter the property changed hands and the new occupants, our clients, wanted it to become a space for more intimate but social gatherings, hence the house was carefully remodelled to preserve its original spirit while introducing spaces for gathering, leisure, and connection with the sea.
The design unfolds through landscaped forecourts, winding pathways, and intimate sit-outs that gently transition one from everyday life into a slower rhythm of coastal living. Interiors open seamlessly toward the Arabian Sea through large wooden-framed glass doors, while courtyards, decks, and a mezzanine lounge dissolves the boundary between inside and outside.
Crafted with locally available red laterite stone, rustic finishes, reclaimed textures, and handcrafted wood details, the house remains deeply rooted in the vernacular language of Konkan architecture. From quiet reading niches and shaded decks to open showers and coconut grove sit-outs, every intervention is designed to celebrate simplicity, nature, and the immersive experience of living by the sea, quiet on the outside, yet unexpectedly expansive within.
